Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The isolated use of traditional perceptual tests for the evaluation of articulation and resonance does not allow to fully describe the exact mode or location of the error in the production of phonemes, particularly in cases of velopharyngeal dysfunction (DVF). Assessment with visualization techniques, such as nasopharyngoscopy and videofluoroscopy, are very helpful in completing the description and diagnosis of error in speech production1. Both techniques allow visualization of the velopharyngeal portal or valve in different planes during speech production2,3. This is very important since the velopharyngeal closure mechanism is three-dimensional, and involves movements not only of the soft palate but also of the posterior wall and the lateral walls of the pharynx. In addition, the study of the dynamic functioning of the velopharyngeal mechanism, the videofluoroscopy technique also allows to measure the size of the soft palate and nasopharynx.

OBJECTIVES

To highlight the usefulness of videfluoroscopic studies, and to protocolize the technique used in the sampling and analysis of its results.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

An analysis is performed on a speech sample in a patient with FVD. The steps and rules to follow for a correct technique are described and the variables used in its analysis are analyzed.

RESULTS

The technique was revalued, a brief manual of videofluoroscopy procedures was prepared.

CONCLUSIONS

With this work, the unification in techniques of taking, standardization of speech samples and description of procedures for the analysis of images in videofluoroscopy have now, a clear, simple and applicable resource.
